As the weather starts to cool and the leaves begin to change, we know what season it is: Football season. Game days are a ritual consisting of fun festivities and an abundance of food. Before the big game you can find fans grilling, drinking, and socializing behind vehicles in the stadium parking lot. Tailgating is meant to be fun, but there’s no reason it has to ‘bench’ your goals. Here are a few tips to keep you in the game!

Be Prepared

  1. Bring small plates to control your portions.
  2. Put fruits and veggies (if offered) on your plate first to allow less room for foods that may not help you meet your goals.
  3. Utilize citrus and spices to flavor your food instead of sauces and dips.
  4. Eat vegetables and a source of protein before going—this way you get your greens in before the day and you won’t be as hungry to indulge in the other foods offered!

Stay Hydrated

  1. Bring water–bottled, sparkling, or in your own water bottle will work!
  2. Add lemon or cut up fresh fruit to add to your water to give it some flavor.
  3. Limit alcohol intake as best you can by only bringing what you will have, and/or commit to drinking a bottle of water with every alcoholic beverage you have.

Keep Busy

  1. Play catch, corn-hole, cards, or any activity that gets others involved.
  2. Walk around: see what other fans do to tailgate!
  3. Enjoy the company and atmosphere. Tailgating isn’t about the food, it’s about enjoying the time with the people you are with and getting excited to cheer on your favorite team!
