How to Stay Active This Winter without a Gym Membership

Fall is officially here! The leaves are falling and the weather is getting cooler. As the days start to get shorter and it requires more layers to exercise outside, it is important to find alternate ways to get your body moving. Physical activity is an important part of weight management and an overall healthy lifestyle. If you are not ready to get back to the gym or do not want to pay the expensive membership fees, we are here to help! We at Livea want to make sure you have the tools to be able to exercise year round, especially in the winter!

There are many benefits to regular physical activity, including:

  • Help you to lose and maintain weight
  • Decrease your risk for many chronic diseases
  • Improve your mood
  • Improve your sleep

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise each week, with at least two (2) strength training sessions. One (1) Regular exercise in the winter can help from developing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), especially when you do it outside and get some sunlight.

There are many activities you can do in the comfort of your home. Finding some quick moves that require little to no equipment can be more accessible than you think! Other fun ways to incorporate movement into your routine this winter include:

  • If you are a fan of walking, going to your local store or mall and walking around each level or aisle. This is a great way to reach your step goal!
  • You can make the winter activity a family affair by going sledding, ice skating or snowshoeing.
  • Instead of using a snow blower, try shoveling all of the snow off of your driveway. Just make sure to bundle up in layers that you can easily take off in case you get too warm. Also, do not forget the hat and mittens!
